physical and mental health

Physical Health

In people with POI, hormone levels drop earlier than usual.
This early drop in hormones can impact physical health in
various ways.

  • The symptoms of POI are like those experienced during menopause
  • People with POI may have difficulty getting pregnant, and some may not be able to get pregnant at all
  • Over time, low estrogen can increase the risk for:
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Weakened bones (osteopenia) and fractures (osteoporosis)
  • Problems with memory and concentration
You can lower these health risks by using hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Talk to your healthcare provider to learn how to manage the effects of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI).

Mental health

For many people with POI, getting a diagnosis can take a long time. This delay can be very stressful and may impact well-being and quality of life.

Some people with POI may experience feelings of depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. They might also notice changes in their sexual relationships. In addition, physical symptoms of POI may also affect mental health and wellbeing.
