Medicine can help some people with POI
feel better and stay healthy

Unfortunately, there is no cure for POI, but hormone replacement therapy (also known as “HRT”)
can help manage the symptoms.

HRT benefits and risks

HRT can treat symptoms of POI. You might have heard that HRT is risky and can cause issues such as stroke or breast cancer. Remember to talk to your provider about your personal and family history to understand your risk. This will help you make a decision about HRT that is best for you.

People with POI who are younger and healthier have a lower risk for problems with HRT.  Because these risks are lower in people with POI, the positive effects of HRT are much greater than the potential risks.

HRT can lower the risk of heart disease, bone fractures, and diabetes. It can also improve mental health and well-being.

HRT is not the best option for everyone with POI. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, had a stroke, or have a history of blood clots, you should not take estrogen. There are many different forms of HRT and finding the right one can take time. It’s important to talk with your provider to make the best decision for you.

    Most people with POI take
HRT until they reach the age
of natural menopause.

When people stop taking HRT, they might have the same symptoms as others their age who are going through menopause.
