For most people with POI, the specific cause is unknown—this is called idiopathic POI

Causes and risk factors for POI include:

Iatrogenic POI

This type of POI is caused by certain medications
and cancer treatments

Autoimmune POI

In rare cases, the immune system, which normally protects the body, can mistakenly attack and harm the ovaries

Genetic POI

  • Changes in certain genes are related to POI. There are several known genetic causes of POI. However, some families have multiple members with POI and no clear genetic cause
  • Researchers are always discovering new genes related to POI. Many people don’t get genetic testing, so it’s hard to know how many have a genetic cause for their POI

Increased risk

Factors like cigarette smoking, low body weight, and the age when a woman starts her period may increase the risk for POI. However, more research is needed to understand this better

There are several signs and symptoms
that should raise suspicion for a primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) diagnosis.
